Summing up your life story into a few hundred words can seem challenging! But by thinking of your essay as a story (and yourself as the hero!) anyone can learn to craft a unique personal statement that’s both fun to write AND read.
Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey has been the backbone of storytelling for decades, and in this 70-minute 1:1 writing workshop, we’ll learn to unlock these same tried-and-true storytelling techniques to craft a creative and compelling personal statement essay that showcases your best, most authentic self.
The skills we develop in the workshop can be adapted for any type of college application essay (including the UC Personal Insight Questions and the Common App essay prompts), as well as help students develop a personal narrative to lean on during interviews. You’ll learn life-long tools to help you stand out from the pack, whether you’re applying to college, fellowships, or future jobs.
WORKSHOP FORMAT:
- Quick student/instructor intro.
- Presentation on Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, and how this storytelling framework can be utilized to write our own creative personal essay.
